Hsinchu Station-Hsinchu Railway Station

Hsinchu’s century-old station was built in 1913 by the Japanese architect Matsugasaki Tsumunaga (松ケ崎萬長). The design is loosely based on Western architecture, with German Gothic architectural elements, incorporating some Baroque styles. It was built in the classic railroad construction style in contrast with many of the government buildings built during the same period.

National Theater-Hsinchu Image Museum

Formerly known as the “Hsinchu Battalion Music Hall,” The National Theater was established in 1933. It was Taiwan’s first Western-style, air-conditioned theater. The architecture is a fusion of Roman and Arabic styles, with walls decorated in a geometric pattern with flowers. It is a steel structure building, and after renovation has become Taiwan’s first movie-themed, images museum.

Hsinchu City Art Gallery & Reclamation Hall

Formerly the main building that housed the Hsinchu Municipal Government Hall, this building has a traditional roof that reflects the Japanese-style. Other parts of the building are distincly Western as per the norm of 1930 building practices common in government offices of the time. Now known as a Reclamation Hall and an Art Gallery, it not only hosts regular art exhibitions but also houses the chronicles of Hsinchu’s pioneering history.

Hsinchu Municipal Government Hall – Hsinchu City Hall

This stately building was built in 1925 in Japanese-Western mixed architectural forms, common to government buildings at the time.The main entrance porch has Roman styled double-columns on both sides of the Western-style arcade hall, and is very impressive, giving the overall form a stately facade.

Hsinchu City Fire Museum

In 1937 this newly built, 6-story-high oberservation deck was the tallest building in Hsinchu City. From the observation deck, firemen could use a string telephone or vintage fire alarms to notify other firefighters. Hsinchu City Fire Museum displays artifacts and the history and serves to education on fire prevention through its fire experience exhibit.

Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation(Hsinchu Exclusive Trade Bureau)

Completed in 1935 the, “Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation(Hsinchu Exclusive Trade Bureau) ,” was known during the Japanese colonial period as "Taiwan Governor- Monopoly Bureau, Hsinchu Branch." Previous to that it was known as the "Hsinchu Branch Office of the Taipei Monopoly Bureau." The building itself has a modern style , emphasizing horizontal lines, and elegantly decorated. At the time it was very avant-garde in its design.

The Residence of Hsin Chih-Ping

Walk from city center

Hsin Chih-Ping was a high school principal. The residence is a Japanese building, surrounded by gardens, with Western-Japanese eclectic style common to the dormitories built for officials at that time. As visitors walk in to the interior space, they will go from the entrance, down the corridors, to the indoor living room, den, etc. The principal residence were in a crumbling state before renovations were made. Now this home hosts seminars on the arts and is becoming a cultural stronghold.

Xiangshan Railway Station
Built in 1928, it is one of remaining wooden structure railway stations on the western route. Xiangshan Railway Station was built in a Japanese style and made fromcypress trees from Mt. Alishan. The main building is still intact to this day. Although the waiting area is small, it has become an integral part of the locals that live here.

National Hsinchu High School Kendo Hall

The Kendo Hall was built in 1926 and was the only martial arts gym to adopt a Western style, brick facade, timber-framed, double-folded roof. The wall follows the roof up to the peak. They are lined with shimizu brick. Mimicking the western-style building butresses, the load bearing convex brick columns bear the weight of the roof. Even after renovations, it still reveals how elegant the architecture used to be.
